## What is OSHA 30-Hour Construction?

OSHA 30-Hour Construction is the supervisor-level course in OSHA's Outreach Training Program. Where OSHA 10 teaches a worker to protect themselves, OSHA 30 teaches a leader to **protect a crew**: spotting hazards before work starts, planning around them, and building the habits that keep a site out of trouble with OSHA.

## What the course covers

OSHA 30 Construction includes all the core topics from OSHA 10, in more depth, plus a wider range of construction hazards and safety management topics:

- **Introduction to OSHA**, worker rights, employer duties, and how inspections and citations work
- **Managing safety and health**: programs, inspections, accident investigation, and working with subcontractors
- **The Focus Four** in depth: falls, electrocution, struck-by, and caught-in or between
- **Personal protective and lifesaving equipment** and **health hazards** such as silica, noise, lead, and heat
- **Stairways and ladders, scaffolds, excavations and trenching**
- **Cranes, derricks, hoists, and rigging**
- **Concrete and masonry, steel erection, materials handling,** and **tools**
- Electives chosen for your work, such as confined spaces, fire protection, motor vehicles, or welding and cutting

## Who should take OSHA 30 Construction?

- Foremen, lead hands, and crew chiefs
- Superintendents and assistant superintendents
- Project managers and owners of small contracting companies
- Safety coordinators and anyone designated to run a site safety program
- Experienced workers stepping up to a lead role

A common pattern for Chicago-area contractors: the whole crew takes [OSHA 10](https://oshawithzahid.com/osha-10-construction.html), and every lead takes OSHA 30.

## Scheduling OSHA 30 around your projects

The hardest part of OSHA 30 is usually pulling supervisors off the job for four days. On-site training solves that with flexible scheduling:

- **Four or five consecutive days** during a slow week
- **One day a week** for four to five weeks
- **Shared sessions** with supervisors from partner companies to split cost

Whichever schedule you choose, OSHA requires the course to be completed within six months, and Zahid will plan the dates with you up front.

## How to book

1. [Send the booking form](https://oshawithzahid.com/book.html) with headcount, location, and preferred schedule.
2. Zahid confirms dates, electives, and group pricing.
3. Supervisors complete the course and receive official DOL 30-hour cards.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does OSHA 30 Construction take?

OSHA 30 is 30 contact hours. With OSHA's 7.5-hour daily limit, it takes at least four days. On-site classes can run four or five consecutive days or be spread over several weeks so supervisors aren't pulled off the job all at once.

### Do I need OSHA 10 before OSHA 30?

No. OSHA 30 is a standalone course. Supervisors can go straight into OSHA 30 without taking OSHA 10 first.

### Who needs an OSHA 30 card?

OSHA 30 is designed for foremen, supervisors, superintendents, and safety staff. Many Chicago-area general contractors and project owners require at least one OSHA 30 holder on site, and some states, such as Nevada, require it for construction supervisors by law.

### Does an OSHA 30 card make me a competent person?

Not by itself. OSHA defines a competent person by their knowledge and their authority to correct hazards on a specific site. OSHA 30 builds a strong foundation, but employers must still designate competent persons and provide task-specific training for things like scaffolds and excavations.

### Can supervisors from several companies train together?

Yes. Group sessions at a shared venue are a good way for smaller contractors to split the cost of an OSHA 30 class.
